Tesla factory paint behaves differently than the German and Japanese cars most installers learned on. The clear coat is water-based, which cures thinner and softer than the solvent-based clears used on Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. On a Model 3 or Model Y, the leading edges — frunk lip, hood, mirror caps, A-pillars — take stone strikes inside the first 5,000 miles for most LA drivers.
Once the paint is chipped, you have two options: live with it, or repaint. A single bumper respray on a Tesla can run $1,200–$2,000 in Los Angeles, which is why most owners who plan to keep the car for years invest in front-end PPF before putting real miles on. Every install at our Van Nuys studio starts from that reality.
Color PPF has overtaken vinyl wrap as the dominant request from Tesla owners this year. Matte and gloss STEK Color PPF changes the look of the car AND protects the paint in a single layer — vinyl gives you neither.

Tesla model coverage notes
Highest stone-strike risk on the frunk lip, hood, and A-pillars. Most clients spec front PPF at minimum.
- Front-end PPF: bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors
- Frunk edge masking critical — the soft clear chips here first
- Highland refresh: same coverage, new headlight contour
Our highest-volume Tesla build. Curved fenders demand more heat work and tighter relief cuts than Model 3 panels.
- Full-body color PPF very common (matte orange, satin grey, military green)
- Juniper 2026: new front fascia, same coverage strategy
- Panoramic roof — ceramic tint pairs naturally
Longer hood, lower stance — front splitter takes most of the strikes. Track Pack PPF (front + rocker + A-pillar) is the common spec.
- Front splitter coverage critical
- Plaid clients often add full-body color PPF
- Door cup masking against fingernail wear
Falcon-wing doors are the unique install challenge — leading edges and door-cup zones need careful template work.
- Falcon-door leading edges: priority coverage
- Yoke steering models: same PPF coverage
- Family-driven Model X: full body protects against shopping-cart strikes
Not painted. Bare cold-rolled stainless steel panels with no clear coat from the factory. Coverage strategy differs from any other Tesla — we'll walk through it next.
Cybertruck stainless protection — a different conversation
The Cybertruck exterior is bare cold-rolled stainless steel, not paint. It stains in ways most owners do not expect. Fingerprints etch under UV. Brake dust eats into raw stainless at panel gaps if it sits through a rainy weekend. Iron fallout from freeway driving leaves orange bloom inside three months without protection.
We install satin and stealth-finish DYNOshield on Cybertrucks rather than gloss, because gloss PPF over raw stainless reads slightly soft on flat panels. Panel-gap detailing — frunk shut-line, bed-rail edges, the windshield wiper sweep arc — gets twice the attention of a normal car. We have installed protection on multiple Cybertrucks per month since the Foundation Series began reaching California, and the spec sheet has settled into a clear pattern.
For Cybertruck owners specifically: full-body PPF is the only way to prevent permanent stainless staining. Color PPF is a popular alternative for owners who want a finish change — matte military green, satin tungsten steel, gloss black. Read our Cybertruck PPF guide for full coverage detail.

How much does Tesla PPF cost in Los Angeles?
At Hussle Customz, Tesla front-end PPF starts at $1,900. Full-body clear or gloss PPF is $5,000, full matte PPF is $5,200, and full color PPF is $5,500. Cybertruck is priced the same as other Tesla models.
Why do Teslas need PPF more than other cars?
Tesla factory paint is industry-typical thinner than European luxury brands and uses a softer water-based clear coat, making leading edges (frunk lip, hood, mirror caps, A-pillars) chip and stone-strike faster.
Does PPF interfere with Tesla Autopilot or sensors?
No. We mask all camera lenses, ultrasonic sensors, radar housings, and the charge-port door before installation. Autopilot, Smart Summon, and supercharging operate exactly as they did from the factory.
How is Cybertruck PPF different?
Cybertruck panels are bare cold-rolled stainless steel with no clear coat. Standard gloss PPF on raw stainless can read slightly soft on flat panels, so we typically recommend satin or stealth-finish DYNOshield on Cybertrucks. Coverage shifts to panel gaps and bed-rail edges.
What warranty comes with STEK DYNOshield PPF?
10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, and delamination. The film is self-healing — light scratches close at roughly 50°C. We register each install with STEK so the warranty stays with the VIN if the car is sold.
How long does a Tesla PPF install take?
Full-body PPF on Model Y, Model 3 Highland, or Juniper takes 4–6 working days. Partial-front PPF plus full ceramic tint is typically 2–3 days. Cybertruck full-body coverage runs 5–7 days.
Can color PPF replace a vinyl wrap on Tesla?
Yes. Color PPF gives you a full color change AND paint protection in a single layer, with the same 10-year STEK warranty. Vinyl wraps are removable and cheaper but offer no real paint protection.
Where does Hussle Customz install Tesla PPF?
Every Tesla stays inside our secure indoor facility in Van Nuys for the entire build duration. Most clients drive in from Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Calabasas, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Brentwood, and Pacific Palisades.
