Family tint is a different conversation than performance tint. Three priorities: protect the kids in the back row from UV exposure, keep the third-row temperature livable on a 105-degree valley summer afternoon, and stay legal up front so the daily commuter parent is not pulled over on the 405. We default to 70 percent VLT ceramic on the front sides (CA-legal, full IR rejection), 20 percent on rear sides, and 20 percent on the rear glass — matched shades that read clean on a white or silver SUV.
Valley heat is the underlying driver. Sherman Oaks regularly sees 105–110 degrees in July and August. The leather rear bench in a Lexus RX or BMW X5 sitting in a Whole Foods parking lot at 2 PM is a 140-degree surface without ceramic tint. California Vehicle Code 26708 sets a 70 percent VLT minimum on front side windows for passenger vehicles, including SUVs and minivans. We meter your factory glass first — most Lexus, Acura, and Honda family SUVs ship with 75–78 percent VLT factory glass, so we use a 92 percent ceramic to land legal at 70 percent. CHP runs enforcement on Sepulveda and the 405; the math has to work.
Rear sides and back glass have no VLT minimum on passenger vehicles. For family SUVs we install 20 percent on the rear sides — dark enough to give the kids in the back row meaningful UV protection and shade, light enough that you can still see clearly out the rear when reversing. SUV third-row quarter glass gets the same 20 percent for matched aesthetics.
