Why Tesla Model Y is the most-requested aftermarket starlight install
The Tesla Model Y has become the highest-volume vehicle for aftermarket starlight headliner installs at our shop, and the reason is straightforward. The Model Y has a clean, removable headliner with no factory starlight option, an interior aesthetic that supports luxury upgrades, and an owner base that responds to interior customization more than most platforms. The same install that goes into a Rolls Royce from the factory at $12,000+ goes into a Model Y at a fraction of that, and the visual result is identical.
Tesla doesn’t offer a factory starlight option on any model. For owners who want the effect, aftermarket installation is the only path. The Model Y in particular has interior real estate well-suited to a starlight install — the headliner is straightforward to remove, the cabin geometry supports a full star field, and the white or black interior trim options pair cleanly with either warm-white or cool-white star colors.
Model Y headliner geometry and what it means for the install
The Model Y comes in two main cabin configurations — the glass roof models (the standard Model Y) and panoramic configurations. Both work for starlight installs, but with slightly different planning.
Glass roof Model Y: the panoramic glass roof means the “headliner” is actually a thin perimeter strip plus an A-pillar to B-pillar section. Stars install along the perimeter and the limited headliner area at the front and rear of the cabin. The visual effect concentrates around the edges rather than filling the full ceiling. This still looks excellent — the stars frame the cabin without overwhelming the open glass roof — but the star count is lower (typically 400 to 700 fibers vs 800 to 1,200 for a traditional headliner).
Standard headliner Model Y configurations (less common in current Model Y trim levels but found on some early builds): full headliner area for fiber routing, full coverage installs with 800 to 1,500 strands.
The install timeline for a Model Y
A Tesla Model Y starlight install typically takes three to four business days at our shop. The Model Y headliner removal is faster than many luxury vehicles because Tesla’s interior assembly uses less adhesive and fewer trim screws than traditional luxury brands.
- Day 1 — Headliner removal — the perimeter trim is removed, the A-pillar covers come off, the headliner is freed and taken to the workbench
- Day 2 to 3 — Fiber routing — the perimeter and headliner sections are mapped for star pattern. Each fiber is hand-pushed through and trimmed flush. For a 600-strand install this is roughly 12 hours of bench work
- Day 3 to 4 — LED engine wiring — the engine mounts inside the headliner cavity, wires route into the Tesla’s 12V system, controller integration is completed
- Day 4 — Reinstall and testing — headliner returns to the vehicle, every fiber is verified to light correctly, brightness range is tested
Color and density choices on Model Y
The Model Y interior is available with black or white seating and trim, and starlight color choice should consider the existing interior tone.
- Warm white stars on black interior — the most-requested combination. Warm white reads as actual night sky against the dark cabin. Highest visual impact
- Warm white stars on white interior — subtle, more refined. The contrast is lower so the stars look softer when illuminated. Best on luxury-trim builds
- Cool white stars on either interior — modern, slightly brighter. Works on both interior colors
- RGB color shifting — available but rare. Most Model Y owners who request RGB end up turning it back to warm white within weeks. The novelty wears off
- Density: sparse (400–600 fibers) — preserves the open feel of the glass roof while adding starlight
- Density: dense (1,000–1,200 fibers) — for full-coverage installs on non-glass headliner configurations
Pairing starlight with other Tesla customization
Most Tesla Model Y starlight customers are doing other work on the vehicle at the same visit. Common pairings:
- Starlight + ceramic window tint — the Model Y glass area is large; ceramic tint darkens the cabin so the starlight effect reads even during daylight hours. This pairing is the most common at our shop
- Starlight + chrome delete — the Model Y has a small amount of chrome trim (door handles, window surrounds). Chrome delete coordinates with darker interior aesthetic for a unified look
- Starlight + PPF or color wrap — the Model Y is in the shop for multiple days for the starlight; adding Paint Protection Film or a color change wrap consolidates the build into one visit
- Starlight + ambient lighting — interior ambient lighting tied to the same LED controller produces fully-coordinated cabin lighting
Does a starlight install void the Tesla warranty?
A professional starlight install does not affect the Tesla powertrain or battery warranty. The install is purely interior and connects to the 12V system via a single low-current wire to the LED engine — this doesn’t touch any high-voltage components.
The portion of the interior covered by Tesla’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic vehicle warranty could potentially be affected for the specific headliner panel (since it’s been removed and reinstalled). In practice we have not seen Tesla refuse a warranty claim related to an aftermarket starlight install, but it’s worth confirming your specific situation with Tesla service before the install if you’re still inside the basic warranty window.
Cost factors specific to Model Y
Tesla Model Y starlight installs sit at a moderate price point in our aftermarket starlight lineup — less than full luxury sedan installs (Mercedes S-Class, Rolls Royce retrofit) because the Tesla headliner is faster to remove, but more than entry-level installs because the perimeter geometry on glass roof models requires careful routing.
Specific factors that move price:
- Star count — 400 strands vs 1,200 strands is roughly a 30 percent labor difference
- Shooting star module — adds material cost (motorized fiber assembly) and modest labor
- Glass roof vs standard headliner — glass roof installs are slightly cheaper (less area to cover)
- RGB / multi-color LED engine — adds material cost over standard warm-white engine
- Custom constellation mapping — adds planning time but not material cost

Final word
The Tesla Model Y is one of the cleanest platforms for an aftermarket starlight headliner install. The headliner removal is straightforward, the interior trim choices work with multiple starlight configurations, and the absence of a factory option means the aftermarket route is the only way to get the effect — without competing against a factory upgrade.
