Avery Dennison is one of the two foundational manufacturers of automotive wrap film (the other being 3M). The Supreme Wrapping Film SW900 line is their premium auto-grade product, distinct from their commercial-fleet vinyl. Where 3M optimizes for adhesive forgiveness during install, Avery optimizes for color consistency and longevity. We carry both because each wins at different jobs — Avery is what we install when shade match is the deciding factor on a full vinyl wrap.

Why Avery wins on color match

Full-body color changes on a luxury vehicle are 60-80 square feet of vinyl spread across 12-15 panels. If two adjacent panels were cut from different production batches with even slightly different pigment density, the eye picks up the seam. Avery's batch process is specifically engineered to minimize this:

  • Pigment lot consistency — Avery cures full-body wrap orders from a single lot when ordered together. We specify lot-matching with our distributor on every Avery order over 30 sq ft.
  • Color tolerance under sun — once installed, SW900 panels age uniformly. After 3-4 years in LA sun, all panels shift together rather than the roof going one shade and the doors another.
  • Reorder consistency — if a panel needs replacing 2 years after install, the matching lot is still available through Avery's archive.

Avery SW900 colorways we install most

The Avery palette has ~100 colorways. The ones we run consistently:

  • Gloss Dark Grey, Gloss Carbon, Gloss Black — staple luxury colors for German cars and exotics.
  • Matte Khaki Green, Matte Charcoal Grey — popular on Range Rover, Cybertruck, G-Wagon.
  • Satin Pearl White, Satin Ghost Pearl — light luxury Tesla / Lucid / Mercedes.
  • Metallic Gloss Slate, Metallic Carbon Black — depth-pigment metallic that rivals factory metallic paint.
  • Colorflow / chameleon series — color-shift specialty colorways.

3M vs Avery — when to pick which

Customers ask us this constantly. Honest decision matrix:

  • Pick 3M when — color choice is fairly common (gloss black, matte black, gloss midnight blue), customer wants standard install timeline, install budget is mid-tier.
  • Pick Avery when — full-body color change in a complex shade (metallics, satin pearls, color-shift), the customer specifically asked about Avery, the build is going to be photographed for portfolio / Insta / press, the customer plans to keep the wrap for the full warranty period.

Pricing difference between 3M and Avery is typically $300-700 on a full body wrap. Worth it on the right job.

FAQ

Is Avery actually different from 3M, or is it marketing?

It's a real difference, but situational. For matte black on a Tesla, you cannot tell the brands apart at install. For metallic colorflow on a Lamborghini full body, the panel-to-panel consistency matters and Avery has measurably tighter tolerance. The price gap is justified for premium full-body color changes; on simple jobs, both brands look identical.

Does Avery have more color options than 3M?

Roughly equivalent total count (~100 colorways each), but the Avery palette has more specialty effects (colorflow, true metallic depth, satin pearls). 3M's palette is broader on conservative gloss blacks/whites/blues.

Do you stock Avery in the shop or order it per job?

Common colorways (gloss dark grey, matte black, gloss carbon) we stock. Specialty colorways (colorflow, metallic specialty) we order per job — typically 5-7 day lead time from our distributor in LA.

Can Avery wraps be removed cleanly?

Yes, within the warranty period. SW900's adhesive is removable with controlled heat — typical strip on a 2-3 year old wrap leaves no glue residue. Past 7 years, removal gets harder and may need adhesive remover.
