California tint laws — the short version

California Vehicle Code requires front side windows to allow more than 70% of light in (VLT). Rear side windows and the rear windshield can be any darkness if the vehicle has dual side mirrors. The windshield strip above the AS-1 line can be any darkness.

In practice: your front windows must stay at 70% VLT or lighter. Your rear windows and back glass can go as dark as you want — 5%, 20%, 35%, anything. Most customers go 20% or 35% on the rear for privacy and heat rejection while staying legal on the fronts.

Note: Some manufacturers offer "ceramic clear" for front windows — maximum heat rejection with no visible darkness, staying well within the 70% VLT requirement. This is the most popular option for front windows in LA.

Ceramic vs. dyed vs. carbon tint — what's actually different

DyedLow (15–25%)None2–4 years
CarbonMedium (40–55%)None5–7 years
CeramicHigh (60–80%)None10+ years
Metallic/SputteredVery HighYes (GPS, phone)7–10 years

In Los Angeles, ceramic is the only film that makes a real difference to cabin temperature. Dyed film primarily reduces visible light — it barely affects infrared heat. On a 95°F day in the Valley, dyed tint looks dark but the cabin still heats up. Ceramic blocks the infrared wavelengths that actually make the car hot.

Why ceramic matters more in Southern California

Most of the heat that builds up in a parked car in LA comes from infrared radiation — not visible light. A dark dyed film blocks visible light but transmits most of the infrared. Ceramic film blocks 60–80% of infrared regardless of shade darkness. This is why a 70% ceramic clear front window rejects far more heat than a 35% dyed film.

Secondary benefits: ceramic film has no metal content, so it doesn't interfere with GPS, phone signal, or toll transponders. It also doesn't fade, bubble, or turn purple over time the way dyed films do.

What to look for in a tint shop

  • Precision plotter-cut film — no hand-cutting on glass, cleaner edges
  • Film brand transparency — reputable shops name their film (Llumar, Huper Optik, Formula One, XPEL)
  • Warranty on film and installation — ceramic films typically carry 10-year warranties
  • Clean install environment — dust and debris under film is a sign of poor prep
